la galaxy 2025 preview: can the champs survive the mls cap purge and compete for it all?

The LA Galaxy are one of the original founding teams of the MLS. They are the most successful domestic team in the league with 6 MLS Cups and 4 Supporters Shield. The last decade didn’t highlight that past. Since Bruce Arena left, there has been chaos and failure. A few managers made their way through the coaching guillotine culminating in a boycott from different supporter groups wanting the team president’s head. From bad roster construction to wooden spoon finishes, the Galaxy was a shell of its former self. Then 2024 happened.
season recap
MLS Record: W 19, D 7, L 8 PTS 64
Playoffs: MLS Cup Winner
Leagues Cup: Round of 32
They had some questions to answer related to how many goals they would leak, how well their new, marquee wingers would perform, and if their #10 could elevate the team. In 2023, The Galaxy were 13th in the Western Conference with 36 points and 67 goals against. The defense was looking to be about the same but with already older players aging further. Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil joined the team as the new Designated Players after the departure of Douglas Costa and Javier Hernandez. There were question marks around how this Galaxy team would break down defenses with their brand of higher possession and if their resources should have gone to another DP striker instead. Riqui Puig had had a good, personal season but left a lot of room for improvement due to him being a liability in defense and when pressed near his goal. His offensive output was good, but he needed help.
The Galaxy answered all that and went back to their winning ways. Their defense got stronger with the acquisition of Carlos Garces. When he was on the pitch the xGA dropped and the Galaxy leaked less goals. Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil delivered with pace, skill, and fun. They combined with Dejan Joveljic with 54 goals and 29 assists in the regular season and playoffs. Riqui Puig had an incredible MPV-caliber season to remember with 17 goals and 12 assists. He had some of the best stats across all non-top four leagues in the world. They finished the season undefeated at home clinching the MLS Cup against NYRB.
Under Greg Vanney, the Galaxy line-up in a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3. Wingers. He loves them. Two of his designated players play that position. Initially, I was curious which side each of them would take. Pec is left-footed, but loves to cut inside. He rarely ends the play at the corner touchline. Paintsil is right-footed and his data showed most of his shots came from the right half of the field. Joseph doesn’t get to the touchline either. At first, Paintsil started on the right wing. He was productive. Then, Gabriel Pec is properly integrated after receiving his visa and plays on the LW or would sub in for Paintsil. He’s nowhere near as productive as Joseph.
At some point after about a dozen games, injuries occurred with Dejan Joveljic and Paintsil takes the FW role. This lets Pec take the right side all for himself and he prospered. After Dejan came back, Paintsil went to the left and the team was better able to use both of their new stars. It was a goal galore.
Many of their attacks involved the combination of the backline or midfielders recovering the ball, finding Puig, and then he’d be off to the races. Through diagonals or deep through balls over the defense sprinting back, the Galaxy punished. If the buildup was slower than a quick counter-attack, the focus was around the penalty box and combining with a triangle to penetrate the defensive line. Most of their goals came from distributing the ball to the right-side of the pitch and making their way into the box. They did well to overload the penalty arc and the final third. Mark Delgado and Miki Yamane were so important on putting pressure on that right-sided portion of the pitch, allowing Gabriel Pec to finish his runs at his nearest post. The Galaxy had too many talented bodies for opposing defenders to handle.
On defense, it still wasn’t perfect, but it was better. Their rest defense improved, and they were better equipped to cover for Riqui’s poor defensive ability. When he wasn’t on the pitch, the team was cleaner and naturally more defensive. They don’t press very hard, and they let enemy teams come to them. This allowed them to pick up their interceptions a little better and had them punish the spaces left from the opposing teams.
After their MLS Cup win, the Galaxy had to tear down a lot of their roster due to salary cap limitations. Players that performed in the final like Dejan and Brugman were traded to other MLS teams. Jalen Neal and Marco Delgado were also let go. Some shuffling has been happening to replace those valuable players.
Roster:
New signings so far for this upcoming season: Mathias Jørgensen (Anderlecht), Lucas Sanabria (Nacional), James Marcinkowski (SJ Earthquakes), Elijah Wynder (Louisville City SC), Christian Ramirez (Columbus Crew), Matheus Nascimento (Botafogo).
Mathias Jørgensen
With well over 500 appearances, Zanka joins the LA Galaxy after most recently plying his trade at Anderlecht. His most recent appearances have him as an LCB. He has a two-year contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season. He had some game-time at the Coachella Valley Invitational. I expect he will rotate minutes with Maya Yoshida who is 36-years-old and played 41 games last season.
Mathias Jørgensen
Lucas Sanabria
The 21-year-old Uruguayan joins the Galaxy from Nacional (Uruguay). He has experience in the Copa Libertadores along with the Uruguayan Primera Division. Lucas normally suits up as a right-sided CDM. He was Diego Polenta’s teammate these past few seasons, who is a former CB for the Galaxy. He’ll be a replacement for Gaston Brugman and potential cover for Edwin Cerrillo, who plays a similar role.
Lucas Sanabria
Elijah Wynder
Elijah joins from Louisville City SC (USL). He had a great season where he played in the 8 role of a 3-4-3. If he plays the LCM role, he could also be seen as a replacement for Gaston Brugman. Elijah will find himself further up the pitch compared to Cerrillo and Sanabria, which is the role Brugman commonly had. That would come with more offensive responsibilities. He had 6 goals last season in USL.
Elijah Wynder
Christian Ramirez
Christian Ramirez will be the replacement for Dejan Joveljić. Christian comes from Columbus after a good season that saw him have 17 goal contributions. He should get goals for this LA Galaxy squad and can do more than poach and linger in the box. Vanney has regularly wanted his FWD’s to contribute consistently and beyond just scoring. Link-up play was something Joveljić was much better in this season. Versatility is important in this role as well. The frontline is equally goal hungry and this team did well to have all of their major contributors get over 10 goals each. Christian Ramirez comes from a team that required those same attributes and boasts a good work rate off the ball.
Matheus Nascimento
Matheus joins the LA Galaxy on loan from Botafogo. This includes a purchase option for the player that will take a MLS U22 Initiative roster spot and an international roster spot. Nascimento has played for many of Brazil’s youth teams. He made his professional debut at the age of 16. Nascimento plays as a forward. Based on his underlying numbers, I don’t assume he’ll take the starting FWD role. He has one goal in Serie A and most of his appearances have been in Carioca.
Matheus Nascimento
Designated players:
Riqui Puig
Riqui is going into his 4th MLS season. He has been electric during his stay in Carson so far. Unfortunately, he had to get surgery for an ACL and is likely to miss most of the season. He suffered this injury in the MLS Western Conference Final against Seattle. The Galaxy does have experience playing without him. In June, they had 3 games were he was unavailable and the Galaxy registered 2 clean sheets and 7 goals.
Gabriel Pec
Pec was signed last season as a Designated Players and had a great campaign. He shoots a lot and he scores a lot. He had 21 goals and 16 assists in 41 appearances and was in the highest percentile of shots attempted.
Whether he can replicate this output again this season is up for debate, but he should still be able to get at least 20 goal contributions across all competitions. Puig being injured does hurt productivity, but the Galaxy still has an attacking midfield of Marco Reus and Diego Fagundez. Even without them, Gabriel can create for himself.
Joseph Paintsil
Joseph Paintsil is going into his 2nd MLS season. He was productive with 15 goals in 37 appearances. Joseph also had 8 assists in MLS. Even then, he underperformed his xG. He is great at getting himself in dangerous spots and should have had more goals based on those opportunities. There were several 1 v 1s against goalkeepers and other similar scenarios where he can do better. He is also injured and could be out for about a month from the start of the season.
Joseph Paintsil
Key Players:
Edwin Cerrillo
The 24-year-old midfielder had a fruitful season. He went from eleven appearances in 2023 to 41 in 2024. He plays more of the 6 role for the team and while his offensive numbers are non-existent, that’s okay. He’s one of the players on the team that does a bulk of the dirty work that Puig, Paintsil, and Reus are unable to do. Many of the recoveries and transition breaks for the Galaxy do start with him. He has recently gotten a new contract that has him at the Galaxy until 2028 including all options.
Carlos Garcés
The Galaxy defense is better in large part due to Carlos Garcés. This was a team that was leaking 2 goals per game in 2023. For 2024, it was 1.4. This team would not have gotten past Seattle in the Western Conference Finals if it wasn’t for this defensive improvement. Since he’s signed, he’s taken the RCB spot next to Maya Yoshida. They both cover each other’s weaknesses well. Garcés pace and tackling make up for Maya’s speed while Maya’s passing does what Carlos can’t.
Miki Yamane
The Galaxy have had some great right-backs in the last decade. From AJ De La Garza to Julian Araujo, it’s a role that’s been so important to the success of the team. It’s even more important now with the focus the Galaxy has had on playing through the right-side of the pitch. Yamane does that very well, he’s great at overlapping and underlapping with Gabriel Pec. He’s good at holding back while Marco Delgado goes up, or linking up with him while Pec would drift inside into the box. He had 6 assists this last season. He will probably share some more minutes in the starting role due to the amount of games the Galaxy will be playing but should still be the main starting RB.
John McCarthy
This spot goes to whomever the starting Goalkeeper is to this team. That isn’t to diminish the work John did. John did great. He faced so many opportunities and still had 6.10 goals prevented while registering 138 saves. When you are facing these many shots, you’re going to concede. He let in 52 goals, but his save percentage was 72.6%. If Garcés is healthy and playing and Maya Yoshida doesn’t regress much, I believe less saves will need to be made.
BREAKOUT PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Mauricio Cuevas
The Galaxy haven’t always had an easy time integrating academy talent. There are one or two exceptions. Julian Araujo had the most head-turning transfer to Barcelona, but he didn’t get to play there. He’s now at AFC Bournemouth. Efrain Alvarez struggled to live up to the hype placed around him, but has been scoring and assisting for Los Xolos in Mexico. Beyond that, it’s been hard to get consistent minutes and to grow as a starter in LA. Mauricio Cuevas was really the only academy player that got minutes. Vivi and Jonathan Perez left on loan due to the arrival of the DP wingers, Jalen Neal was traded to Montreal, and Aguirre was sold to Chivas.
With all that, Cuevas got minutes, assists, and a goal. He had exciting moments. This Galaxy loves to attack, and Cuevas gets to do that regularly. With the number of games the Galaxy will be playing, he’ll get opportunities. I don’t predict he’ll overtake Yamane as the starting right-back, but I suspect he’ll get a couple of starts and more than 500 minutes this season.
upcoming season expectations
The goal for the LA Galaxy is to make the playoffs and have a deep run, again. They’ll also be in CCC and Leagues Cup. They should easily make the playoffs and still have the roster to hit Top 4 in the West. They should get out of the group stage of Leagues Cup since they’ll be at home. They have Cruz Azul, Club Tijuana, and Club Santos Laguna. Santos is the worst team in Liga MX and Tijuana is only 3 points better. Cruz Azul will be their toughest tie. I predict they’ll get 2 wins, and the Cruz Azul game is a tossup. LA Galaxy should get past the 1st round of CCC but with Paintsil potentially injured and without Puig, I don’t see them getting past the Mexican clubs in home and away legs, but I comfortably believe they can get through any MLS club on their side of the bracket besides Seattle.
summary
Galaxy has the firepower to reach another MLS Cup Final, but I expect them to fall short of that goal unless the defense becomes much better. If Marco Reus can find his footing and Diego Fagundez can continue to be a great backup for Puig while the latter is injured, I can see this team making it to another Western Conference Final.
